The measuring process:
Step 1: Working clockwise, preferably from an adjoining corner, measure the overall length of each wall in your kitchen and then write it down. It helps if you draw a rough sketch of the room using grid or graph paper and then label each wall accordingly. The trick to accurate wall measuring is to measure from the edge of the wall to the other edge, skipping over any windows, large appliances, fixtures or other permanent features initially.
Step 2: Again working clockwise, measure the wall's height. Use the tape measure to find the precise length of the wall, from floor to ceiling, including trim. During this step, you'll also want to make note of any architectural elements such as recessed ceilings or permanent fixtures, which should be taken into account.
Step 3: Identify and measure all windows, large appliances, fixture, vents, outlets, furniture and anything else that you plan to keep in the room after installing your new cabinets. Record your findings and note the centerline of all permanent features.
